o Before we begin, please take a moment to download the checklist version of this video at freebedbugtraining.com, while you’re on the web page please click on the link called CLIENT PREPARATION CHECKLIST FOR THE CONTROL OF BED BUGS.
o Let’s begin with some household items you’ll need for the preparation. A “flat Head” screwdriver, 5 to 10 garbage bags, a pen or pencil to mark off items from the checklist.
o Starting in the bedroom we’ll first remove any television sets from the wall units and unplug all electronic items, like clock radios and lamps.
o Remove all electrical wall plates, phone jack plates and light switch covers.
o For proper treatment, all these items should remain in the bedroom area.
o Make sure the laundry machine is empty of any previous wash before we start the laundering procedure.
o Remove all your bedding and pillows, and place them in the garbage bags.
o NOTE: Articles under the beds provide an ideal place for bedbugs to hide. All clothing or garments loose around the room must be bagged and laundered. All other objects that were previously stored under the bed should not be moved as bedbugs may be relocated into other areas of the structure.
o At this time, all clothing should now be in securely tied garbage bags and ready to be taken to the Laundry Room.
o Make sure to bring only one bag at a time to the laundry room and place the clothing directly into the washing machine, and not to load more than 50% of the machine’s capacity.
o It’s necessary that all garments be laundered in hot water. The temperature should reach over 60°C or 140°F.
o Or you may also use the dryer on the highest setting for a minimum of 30 minutes, reaching temperatures over 40°C or 104°F. The dryer must be capable of reaching a temperature of over 40°C to kill all stages.
o Make sure to immediately discard all empty garbage bags used to transport the clothing into an exterior garbage receptacle.
o Note: All laundered items must remain out of the treatment area during service. Clothing and fabrics associated with beds/sofas cannot be treated with pesticides due to the prolonged contact with skin. It is for this reason that this step is crucial and necessary to ensure the treatment program does not fail with the re-introduction of bedbugs from infested clothing.
o Let’s go back to the bedroom to vacuum the floor and rug extensively. Please make sure to remove the vacuum bag immediately and discard in an exterior garbage receptacle.
o Pry baseboards away from walls where possible or when instructed by the Abell Service Technician.
o During the service, it’s necessary for you and your pets to vacate the premises and to not re-enter until at least 4 hours after the treatment.
o Persons with underlying health conditions should consult their family physician where they have concerns regarding re-entry time.
o Fish aquariums may be left on site, however, they should be covered and air filters must be disconnected for the duration of the treatment.
